Summary
Perched along the banks of the Sydney Harbor, the Sydney Opera House is one of the most iconic and recognizable structures in the world. It began in 1956 when a year-long international design competition was held. The winning design selected was from Jorn Utzon and the process of building the multi-purpose facility commenced in 1959. Construction was done in three stages over a 14-year span and was riddled with problems and delays through. The opera house was finally opened in 1973 in grand style with Queen Elizabeth II in attendance. Now, more than 8-million people visit the Sydney Opera house annually, attending the more than 3,000 events staged yearly.
