Summary
Les syndicats en leurs murs . Un « chez soi », un « chez nous » : c'est ainsi que les syndicats ont voulu et conçu les Bourses du travail, Maisons du peuple et Maisons des syndicats.. Apparus en 1887, ces édifices d'initiative municipale ou ouvrière ont connu leur plein essor dans l'entre-deux guerres. Ils constituent un patrimoine architectural et symbolique d'une singulière originalité : une quarantaine d'entre eux sont classés monuments historiques ou inscrits à l'inventaire du patrimoine.. Cet ouvrage les restitue en majesté : à la confluence de l'histoire syndicale et municipale, de celle de l'architecture et de la ville, il analyse ces modes d'hébergement syndical en interrogeant leur origine, en retraçant les interactions entre municipalités et syndicats.. À l'heure où nombre de Bourses et Maisons du travail ont été reconverties en édifices culturels, cette retraversée de cent vingt-cinq ans de luttes mais aussi de sociabilité syndicale et ouvrière à partir du prisme des bâtiments qui les ont abritées dévoile un pan oublié de l'histoire industrielle et sociale : ces « forteresses » qui magnifient la dignité du travail ont été une expression majeure de la force du syndicalisme et de sa centralité historique..
