Luce : « vagabonde » ; Adèle : « voleuse » ; Émilienne : « vicieuse ». Trois mots qui valent rappel à l'ordre, réquisitoire, sanction. Ou comment le langage, le système éducatif, la psychiatrie et l'institution judiciaire construisent le féminin, en lui opposant des contre-modèles. Dans les années 1950 et 1960, une adolescente a tôt fait de virer « mauvaise fille » : un flirt, une sortie au bal ou au café, voire une simple fugue de quelques heures peuvent suffire à enclencher l'engrenage judiciaire, qui la conduira devant le juge des enfants. Beaucoup seront ensuite placées en internat, hospitalisées, ou emprisonnées. Un mécanisme que Véronique Blanchard dévoile à travers l'analyse de centaines de documents exhumés des archives du tribunal pour enfants de la Seine. Les voix des jeunes filles qui en surgissent racontent autant de trajectoires brisées, de rêves réprimés - et de révoltes indomptées. Elles nous plongent dans les coulisses de la fabrique du genre et des inégalités. Car si les lois ont évolué, si les regards portés sur le genre ont changé, si les adolescentes d'aujourd'hui ne portent plus les mêmes prénoms, certains mécanismes, eux, persistent : ces voix n'ont aujourd'hui rien perdu de leur force subversive.
