Summary
1762 marque la fin de la Nouvelle France et la Conquête officielle de ce qui deviendra le Bas-Canada par les Britanniques. Les communautés autochtones installées dans des Missions jésuites dans la vallée du Saint Laurent doivent alors changer d'interlocuteur dans leurs négociations et elles se rendent rapidement compte que les méthodes employées par la France et l'Angleterre ne sont pas les mêmes. Pire, avec la fin des guerres sur le territoire en 1812, les Britanniques les traitent comme un « problème à régler », car trop coûteux. Face à ce changement de position, certaines communautés décident de suivre les règles de la société coloniale pour mieux défendre leurs intérêts et préserver leur identité. C'est dans ce contexte que l'écriture apparaît pour les communautés comme le moyen le plus pratique pour communiquer avec les autorités coloniales mais aussi pour partager, conserver et défendre les intérêts de chacun. Le processus d'alphabétisation, qui se met en place surtout après 1830, montre des sociétés en pleine transformation sur fond de religion et de luttes de pouvoir.
