La vie sans musique est une erreur éreintante, une besogne, un exil . « O combien j'aime la musique, mon ami Peter Gast ! » . Les Lettres à Peter Gast, surnom donné par Nietzsche (1844-1900) au compositeur Heinrich Köselitz, qui fut à la fois son secrétaire et son confident, et dont il fit un véritable double, constituent une correspondance unique dans l'histoire de la philosophie - et la plus importante que Nietzsche ait entretenue avec un ami.. Au-delà des considérations sur la musique - l'art majeur selon Nietzsche -, ces lettres constituent un témoignage capital de la pensée du philosophe au moment de sa pleine maturité intellectuelle, entre 1876 et le 3 janvier 1889, jour de son basculement vers la folie. Elles attestent de son évolution et de ses différents jalons, depuis la rupture avec Wagner (Humain, trop humain) jusqu'à son autobiographie et ultime oeuvre (Ecce Homo), en passant par l'accomplissement du Gai savoir ou de Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra.. Peter Gast est ainsi le témoin privilégié de la philosophie de Nietzsche : ces lettres en constituent le reflet en même temps que celui de la vie quotidienne du penseur allemand. Elles ont donc aussi valeur de journal..
