Summary
Quelle fut la réaction des francophones du Québec aux premières manifestations de la diversité culturelle à l’aube du XXe siècle ? Comment, en particulier, ont-ils accueilli les immigrants irlandais, juifs est-européens et chinois dans la ville de Québec ? En ces temps de bouleversement et de conditions économiques extrêmement difficiles, la population francophone majoritaire semble pour le moins inquiète, confuse et très réticence face à la venue de ces immigrants qui doivent surmonter de nombreux obstacles pour s’intégrer à la société canadienne-française. C’est du moins ce que révèle l’étude qu’a menée l’auteur de ce livre qui, par le prisme du journal L’Action catholique – soutenu par l’Église et représentatif des opinions d’une grande partie des élites francophones conservatrices –, décrit l’apparition de commerces juifs dans la capitale provinciale, et notamment l’ouverture, en 1931, du grand magasin Pollack. Avec une écriture limpide, et appuyé par plusieurs images d’archive et des sources écrites, l’historien trace le portrait précis d’un sujet qui donne à mieux comprendre les enjeux politiques et idéologiques de la diversité religieuse jusqu’à aujourd’hui.
