Summary
En 1883, le curé Labelle de Saint-Jérôme, dans les Laurentides au Québec, écrit au curé Filion de Saint-Jean-Baptiste au Manitoba : « Soyez tranquille, je m’en vais au Nord-Ouest avec mes gens des cantons de la “Rouge”. Les deux rivières qui portent le même nom, de la “Rouge”, la mienne et la vôtre, sont appelées à se joindre. Nous nous acheminons tranquillement vers les belles et fertiles régions de la baie James. Une fois là, nous nous donnerons la main. » Ce vaste mouvement de colonisation voulait assurer la survie culturelle des Canadiens français dans le nouvel État canadien créé en 1867. La lutte semblait se faire maintenant sur la maîtrise du sol et de ses ressources et sur la victoire démographique des Canadiens français dans la fédération. Elle reposait aussi sur l’immigration française provenant de Belgique, de France et de Suisse. On verra les nombreuses raisons de l’improbable succès de ce projet.
