Summary
En 2004 et en 2005, les Acadiens ont célébré deux importants anniversaires : le 400e anniversaire de la naissance de l'Acadie et le 250e de la Déportation. L'historien Ronald Rudin a participé à ces commémorations, s'est glissé parmi les participants pour « revivre » ces événements historiques. Les observations qu'il en a tirées et les nombreuses entrevues qu'il a menées auprès des participants forment un document passionnant sur les différentes manières de présenter et de commémorer le passé dans l'espace public. Mais Rudin ne s'intéresse pas aux seuls Acadiens, il recueille également les propos défendus par les anglophones et les représentants des Premières Nations, groupes qui percevaient aussi un enjeu historique, culturel et politique dans de telles commémorations. En effet, chacune des communautés, voire chacun des individus qui participaient aux différentes célébrations, avait son histoire à raconter, et chacun tenait à ce qu'elle soit entendue. C'est ainsi que L'Acadie entre le souvenir et l'oubli donne l'occasion à Ronald Rudin d'étudier les visées souvent conflictuelles qui se cachent derrière l'histoire officielle.
