Summary

Ahmed el-Bagdadi, issu d'une tribu de « hardis cavaliers, de dignité chatouilleuse », a délaissé la vie nomade pour l'animation du bazar. Dans l'honorable corporation des voleurs de Bagdad, la « ville d'or », on parle de lui avec un mélange d'effroi et de fascination. Mais pour dérober le coeur de Zobéide, la fille du calife, il devra s'emparer de « la chose la plus rare de l'univers » et déjouer les sortilèges de trois princes étrangers.... Le film de Raoul Walsh et Douglas Fairbanks, l'une des plus prodigieuses productions du muet, avait conquis les écrans en 1924. Surgi d'un conte oriental, l'écrivain-aventurier Ahmed Abdullah, ayant oeuvré à son scénario, en tira un roman digne d'un épisode occulte des Mille et une nuits, comme s'il inventait sur papier le cinéma parlant et en Technicolor. Car ce livre, dira Fairbanks, « est l'histoire des choses dont nous rêvons, quand nous sortons de nous-mêmes à la conquête des pays de la Fantaisie »..
