À travers sa formidable série-phénomène Une histoire de la 2e Guerre mondiale, Max Gallo fait revivre les années terribles où s'est joué le destin de la France et du monde. Sous sa plume vibrante, l'Histoire est là, vivante, et ses témoins renaissent. En 1943, l'armée allemande vacille. Hitler semble s'enfoncer dans une impasse, et l'espoir, timide, s'éveille dans une Europe asphyxiée. Alors que des soldats de plus en plus jeunes sont envoyés au front, les nazis torturent, déportent et exterminent. Cependant, malgré les souffrances et les sacrifices, on se prend à croire en un avenir. Début 1944, Roosevelt et Churchill mettent en place le débarquement des troupes alliées, prévu le 6 juin. Prises en étau, les forces de l'Axe capitulent les unes après les autres. Hitler, malgré la débandade de ses troupes, croit encore à la victoire. Mais, devant l'entrée des Russes à Berlin, il se suicide, laissant ses généraux signer la reddition de l'Allemagne le 8 mai 1945. Le 2 septembre, les Japonais signent l'armistice. Au prix de dizaines de millions de morts, la paix est revenue, la liberté a triomphé. Un nouveau monde est à construire.
