Summary
Le sang des collines . Sur les abruptes collines de Cumbrie, dans le nord-ouest de l'Angleterre, on est berger de père en fils. Steve Eliman, un temps chauffeur routier, est de retour dans la modeste ferme familiale pour épauler son père vieillissant lorsqu'une épidémie de fièvre aphteuse frappe la région, vidant les vallées de leurs moutons, inondant le ciel d'une fumée noire. Frappé de plein fouet par cette tragédie, Steve n'a d'autre choix que de se mettre au service de William Herne, un éleveur voisin, qui l'entraîne dans une périlleuse entreprise au nom de leur survie commune. Mais c'est compter sans les sentiments qu'Helen, l'épouse de ce dernier, réveille chez Steve, et le cortège de sourdes rivalités entre les deux hommes. D'autant que les choses ne vont pas vraiment se passer comme prévu.... Dans ce premier roman qui n'est pas sans évoquer l'univers de Cormac McCarthy, Scott Preston plonge le lecteur au coeur du monde rural d'aujourd'hui et de son impitoyable réalité, maintenant un suspense oppressant jusqu'à la dernière ligne.
