« Je n'ai jamais oublié l'horreur qui s'empara de nous lorsque nous reconnûmes que c'étaient des corps humains qui étaient mutilés de la sorte. Nos cheveux devinrent à pic sur nos têtes, et semblaient soulever nos casques… »Voilà ce que contait le père Giasson, vieux pêcheur Madelinot, à Placide Vigneau, célèbre mémorialiste de la Côte-Nord. Ce récit terrible, c'est celui du naufrage du voilier Granicus, et surtout de ses suites, qui virent l'île d'Anticosti être le théâtre d'un terrifiant épisode d'anthropophagie.Né en 1842 à Havre-aux-Maisons, Placide Vigneau a été pêcheur, capitaine de goélette et, plus tard, gardien du phare de l'île aux Perroquets, dans l'archipel de Mingan. C'est là qu'il a mis en forme ses Récits de naufrages, qui mettent en scène l'univers maritime de la Côte-Nord au XIXe siècle et, plus largement, la vie dans les territoires qui bordent le golfe du Saint-Laurent. Cet espace dynamique et complexe, peuplé par des pêcheurs et des chasseurs aux origines diverses, revit sous la plume attachante d'un autodidacte de génie. Ses textes, restés inédits jusqu'à ce jour, sont éclairés par les annotations et les présentations de l'Équipe de recherche Manuscrits de l'Université du Québec à Rimouski.
