C'est une oeuvre politique, et rares sont les gens de par le monde qui ont vécu, par choix et de leur libre volonté, une telle expérience, la plus ambitieuse qui fut jamais tentée. Qui pourrait dire non à une tentative de fonder un monde meilleur, un monde d'égalité et de justice ? Nous n'avons pas dit non. Nous avons déserté. ». Avec humour, compassion, mais aussi avec une lucidité totale, Yaël Neeman raconte l'histoire du kibboutz Yehi'am, que ses parents, originaires de Hongrie, ont participé à fonder. À travers les yeux d'une enfant puis d'une adolescente qui ne sait pas dire « je », qui se fond mentalement dans un « nous » permanent au service d'une utopie hors d'atteinte, elle initie le lecteur à cette vie si particulière.
