Summary
Le narrateur est obsédé par Alice, médecin comme lui, dont il n’arrivera jamais à calmer les angoisses existentielles et amoureuses. Lorsqu’il la laisse à Queens, c’est pour se retrouver à Kuujjuaq, dans son monde à elle. Entre deux patients, quand il n’en peut plus de penser à Alice, il consomme des femmes sur le web ou va pêcher. Là, enfoncé jusqu’à mi-cuisse dans les eaux d’un torrent ou le ventre étendu sur la banquise qui fond, il calme sa faim en mangeant du poisson cru. Et il remonte le temps, pour essayer de s’expliquer. Il s’invente une histoire, s’inspirant des hommes qui l’ont précédé, depuis Roméo, l’arrière-grand-père, le premier de sa généalogie à avoir tué un homme, sur les rives du Klondike. Quelles traces ont laissées ceux qui ont traversé les années avant les nôtres? Que sème-t-on derrière soi dans la fuite?. Le Nord que propose Marc Séguin n’est pas seulement blanche immensité et splendeurs boréales ; ce Nord est aussi celui de l’exploitation d’uranium et des excès d’alcool. Mû par un profond respect pour le territoire et ceux qui l’ont marché pendant des siècles, l’auteur de Nord Alice témoigne néanmoins d’une déroute. Mais, justement, c’est peut-être jusqu’au bout de ses échecs qu’on devrait avoir l’humilité d’aller pour se trouver.
