Summary
Le pouvoir des lectrices . Une histoire de la lecture au XIXe siècle . Dans les années 1800-1840 domine l'idée que les lectrices ne s'approprieraient pas correctement les livres. Leur accès au savoir est limité, sous peine de mettre en péril l'équilibre entre les sexes. Contre ces préjugés, Isabelle Matamores nous plonge au plus près du quotidien des lectrices et de leurs pratiques. Elle propose non une histoire des représentations et des discours sur la lecture des femmes, mais une histoire genrée de la lecture avec les femmes. Que lisaient-elles ? Quel sens donnaient-elles à leurs lectures ?. Ce qui rapproche les femmes qui composent la biographie chorale de ce livre c'est qu'elles lisent. Un peu, beaucoup ; dans leur jeunesse ou tout au long de leur vie ; de manière hésitante ou plus experte ; des romans, de l'histoire ou de la philosophie ; seules, par-dessus l'épaule d'un frère ou d'un père, entre femmes, ou en société.. Si les récits des femmes ici convoqués témoignent du poids des normes, ils laissent surtout transparaître de nombreux usages du livre : se distraire, s'échapper du quotidien, débattre, apprendre, enseigner, ou agir en politique. Et surtout, dans une France corsetée par le Code civil, le désir de s'émanciper..
