« J'ignorais, cet après-midi-là, que la terre attendît de se changer à nouveau en tombe quelques brèves journées plus tard. Dommage que je n'aie pu arrêter la balle dans sa course et la remettre dans le canon de la 22 long rifle pour qu'elle en reparcoure en sens inverse la spirale, réintègre le chargeur et se resolidarise avec la douille, se conduise enfin comme si on ne l'avait jamais tirée ni même chargée dans la carabine. Je voudrais m'être contenté de passer devant la boutique en cet après-midi pluvieux de février sans jamais y pénétrer. Je voudrais bien avoir eu envie d'un hamburger au lieu de balles. Il y avait un restaurant tout à côté de l'armurerie. On y faisait de très bons hamburgers, mais je n'avais pas faim. Je songerai à ce hamburger le restant de mes jours. » . Il suffit parfois d'une bourrasque pour retrouver la trace du passé, et redevenir cet enfant marginal de la Grande Dépression, occupé, tennis aux pieds, à pêcher des truites d'Amérique en étrange compagnie... Avec une grâce infinie, Richard Brautigan parcourt en sens inverse la spirale de sa vie, qu'il rêve et remodèle à sa guise, rappelant la puissance à la fois douce et tragique du souvenir.
