Summary
Dans la nuit du 3 au 4 novembre 1838, environ 500 hommes convergent vers Beauharnois, à une quarantaine de kilomètres au sud-ouest de Montréal. La moitié sont armés de fusils et l'autre, d'outils transformés en armes de fortune. Ce sont les patriotes qui cherchent à se libérer du joug de l'impérialisme britannique. À partir de récits croisés des témoins de l'époque, souvent antagonistes, les événements sont racontés de façon chronologique par ceux qui les ont vécus : l'attaque du manoir seigneurial de Beauharnois, l'arraisonnement du Henry Brougham dans le port, la détention de la seigneuresse Jane Ellice au presbytère, la déroute des patriotes, les arrestations, les procès, les condamnations, les exécutions et la déportation en Australie. De plus, l’auteur a retracé certains d’entre eux, une fois revenus d’exil. Né à Montréal en 1956, journaliste, éditeur et conférencier, Marcel Labelle est l'auteur et le co-recherchiste de la télésérie Destins (Historia, 2004-2005) réalisée par Yvon Trudel et produite par André Dubois. Il a été recherchiste pour le documentaire Hydro-Québec, l'énergie d'un peuple (TVA, 2008) réalisé par Guillaume Sylvestre et produit par Denise Bombardier. Il est l'auteur de la biographie Adélard Godbout, précurseur de la Révolution tranquille (Lidec, 2007).
