Summary
Du 19 au 21 juillet 1996, des pluies diluviennes s'abattent sur les régions du Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, de Charlevoix, de la Haute-Mauricie et de la Haute-Côte-Nord. Jusqu'à 275 millimètres d'eau tombent 50 heures durant, phénomène météorologique qui ne se produit qu'une fois tous les 10 000 ans.
Les glissements de terrain se comptent par centaines, et près de 500 résidences sont réduites à néant. Dix personnes perdent la vie, dont trois enfants. On évalue à plus d'un milliard de dollars les dommages matériels causés par l'une des plus importantes catastrophes naturelles de l'histoire du Québec.
Mais nulle somme d'argent ne saurait dédommager Richard Roy, réfugié pendant des heures dans un arbre avec sa fille, au fond d'une crevasse; ni Jason Paquet-Garceau, en deuil pour toujours de son frère et de sa sœur; ni Hugues Simard, dont la vie familiale vole en éclats au lendemain des inondations; ni les filles de Denis Samson et d'Hélène Racine, qui ont perdu leurs parents dans les eaux déchaînées du Saint-Laurent à la suite du naufrage de leur voilier.
Mikaël Lalancette a recueilli les témoignages poignants de 25 personnes qui ont vécu cette tragédie et rappelle le titanesque travail de reconstruction – et de guérison – qu'elle a nécessité.
