Histoire de Gaza . La tragique actualité de Gaza a malheureusement occulté la très longue histoire de cette oasis prospère, convoitée depuis l'Antiquité par tous les empires de la région. C'est en 1948 qu'a basculé le destin de cette cité millénaire, réduite à une « bande » de territoire, d'abord administrée par l'Égypte, puis, deux décennies plus tard, occupée par Israël. Matrice des fedayines et berceau de l'intifada, Gaza assume depuis lors, pour le meilleur et pour le pire, un rôle déterminant dans le nationalisme palestinien. Loin de n'être qu'une enclave assiégée, Gaza détient la clef de la paix ou de la guerre au Moyen-Orient, car c'est là que se jouent aussi bien la sécurité d'Israël que l'avenir de la Palestine. Cette recherche sans équivalent par l'ampleur de sa documentation, jusque dans les développements contemporains, va au-delà de la réflexion historique sur une des crises majeures de notre temps. Elle est aussi un message d'espoir pour celles et ceux qui croient et travaillent à une paix durable entre Israël et la Palestine.
