Summary
La guerre de Trente Ans est née en Bohême, de l'antagonisme entre l'alliance des princes allemands protestants et l'autorité impériale catholique représentée par Ferdinand II. Ce conflit local prit une ampleur européenne quand s'y joignirent les grandes puissances protestantes du Nord (Danemark et Suède), soutenues financièrement par Richelieu et Louis XIII, qui avaient intérêt à la défaite de l'empereur Ferdinand II. C'est en 1634 que la France intervint ouvertement, en attaquant l'Espagne, elle-même en conflit avec les Pays-Bas. Dès lors, les hostilités s'étendirent à l'Europe. Les traités de Westphalie en 1648 mirent fin à une guerre dévastatrice et meurtrière, notamment pour l'Allemagne et pour la Lorraine, et qui apporta un profond bouleversement démographique et politique. Il est indispensable d'en connaître l'histoire si l'on veut comprendre l'évolution de l'Europe jusqu'à nos jours.
