Préface de Gregory Kennedy Traduction de Jean Guy Robichaud Alors que la France commence tout juste à occuper l'Acadie, la mort inopinée du roi Henri IV met un frein aux efforts de colonisation. Les incursions anglaises, la lutte des compagnies commerciales, la présence des missionnaires et l'influence des nations autochtones compliquent encore la situation. Dans ce paysage troublé, c'est toutefois le décès du gouverneur Isaac de Razilly en 1635 qui mène à la guerre civile acadienne, un conflit armé qui voit Charles de Saint-Étienne de La Tour et Charles de Menou d'Aulnay se disputer le contrôle de la colonie pendant plusieurs années. M.A. MacDonald offre un récit captivant de ce chapitre méconnu de l'histoire de l'Acadie. L'auteure jette la lumière sur les causes de la guerre ouverte entre La Tour et d'Aulnay, sur le déroulement du conflit et sur les personnalités opposées des deux hommes. L'ouvrage traite également du rôle politique et militaire joué par Françoise-Marie Jacquelin, épouse de La Tour, qui dut défendre le fort familial en l'absence de son mari.
