Summary
Le titre de ce livre peut surprendre, car le Moyen Age est en général considéré comme l'apogée de l'Eglise.
L'auteur de cette synthèse d'une histoire de douze siècles, allant de la conversion de Constantin à la Réformation protestante, a voulu montrer comment l'Eglise catholique s'est solidement enracinée en Occident, soit en acceptant de collaborer avec les empereurs romains, puis les rois barbares, les Carolingiens et leurs successeurs (IVe-XIe siècle), soit en voulant diriger toute la société en combattant ses adversaires et en étendant son influence en Orient et même en Extrême-Orient (XIIe-XIIIe siècle).
Sont également rappelés les efforts des hommes et des femmes, des religieux et des laïcs, généralement considérés comme des saints, pour réclamer des réformes sans toujours y parvenir. Donc des réussites et des grandeurs dont nous gardons encore quelques témoignages, mais aussi des faiblesses et des échecs. Le rêve d'une " civilisation chrétienne " n'a pas pu se réaliser.
