Summary
Le fleuve . En Finlande, pendant la guerre de Laponie, en 1944, une jeune fille de treize ans est contrainte de quitter sa ferme natale avec la servante et le valet de la ferme voisine, ainsi que huit vaches et un veau. Ses frères sont morts au combat, son père a été mobilisé dans l'armée et sa mère, mentalement instable, s'est enfuie avant eux. Le groupe rejoint la grande caravane de réfugiés jetés sur les routes et qui se dirigent vers l'ouest, devant les troupes allemandes en retraite, afin de se mettre en sécurité du côté suédois de la Torne, fleuve qui marque la frontière. Après une marche éprouvante, marquée par la faim et le froid, dans un tourbillon de personnes et d'animaux en fuite, ils finissent par atteindre le bac et traverser le fleuve. Le fleuve évoque également les camps de réfugiés en Suède, où les Finlandais ont dû rester jusqu'à dix mois avant de pouvoir retourner dans leur Laponie dévastée. Rosa Liksom écrit dans une prose directe et dénuée de sentimentalisme, mais ici, lorsqu'elle dépeint les hommes et les animaux dans cette fuite chaotique, elle laisse également une place à l'amour et à la compassion. Et propose ainsi un roman stimulant sur le sort toujours actuel des migrants.
