Summary
Le XIXe siècle a été un long apprentissage des Lumières. Dans un Paris capitale des révolutions et de la modernité, on s'interroge sur la menace de l'ombre sociale. C'est pourquoi, de l'époque romantique aux grands travaux haussmanniens, la nuit de la grande ville devient objet de discours et de conquête. Cette histoire de l'humanisation et de la rationalisation des nuits parisiennes révèle ainsi des formes inédites de sensibilité citadine, en explorant le nouveau rapport des Parisiens au temps et à la rue. Paris invente alors le noctambulisme mais se prend aussi d'affection pour la silhouette vacillante du chiffonnier et se délecte au récit des crimes sanglants commis par les " escarpes ". Entre privé et public, solitudes et multitudes, oisiveté et labeur, misérables et dandies, le Paris nocturne du XIXe siècle pourrait trahir les hantises, les tensions et les aspirations secrètes de la société post-révolutionnaire, celle du clair-obscur. C'est peut-être durant ces " douze heures noires " que Paris dévoile son âme, c'est-à-dire la vitalité et la fragilité mêlées de son peuple.
