Summary
À l'issue du démantèlement de l'Empire espagnol, au début du XIXe siècle, le Rio de la Plata est la seule région à ne pas donner immédiatement naissance à un État. En lieu et place de l'Argentine actuelle coexistent quatorze républiques souveraines, qui se gouvernent de façon indépendante pendant une trentaine d'années. Ce livre retrace la genèse et l'organisation de ces républiques, leurs tentatives d'union constitutionnelle et la façon dont celle-ci se réalise au moyen de pactes bilatéraux. Grâce à une enquête originale et à des documents inédits, Geneviève Verdo offre un nouvel éclairage sur les modalités de la construction politique dans l'Amérique latine du XIXe siècle, issue de la décomposition des structures impériales. Elle invite à privilégier une autre tradition de la culture républicaine, relative à l'autonomie des corps territoriaux et aux pratiques politiques des communautés qui les composent. Ce dépaysement fécond permet de repenser, en miroir de l'Europe, une voie différente de la modernité politique..
