Summary
Catalyseur des pires maux de L'époque, la construction du « problème musulman » affecte l'ensemble de la société française. Fruit d'un intense travail de production idéologique, cette construction alimente la stigmatisation des populations issues de l'immigration postcoloniale : l'épais brouillard intellectuel qu'elle représente fait en effet obstacle aux tentatives d'appréhender de manière rigoureuse et dépassionnée le fait musulman dans les quartiers populaires. Afin de remédier à cette situation, Hamza Esmili retrace dans cet ouvrage la généalogie de ce « problème », des discours dénonçant les « banlieues de l'islam » au paradigme du « séparatisme islamique », en passant par la mise en place des dispositifs de lutte contre la radicalisation. S'appuyant à la fois sur la sociologie de l'immigration et l'anthropologie de l'islam, il souligne l'écart qui sépare ces représentations de la réalité de la piété redécouverte en cité. Et montre que cette réaffiliation religieuse n'est ni un résidu éphémère du procès d'intégration, ni un persistant atavisme civilisationnel, mais un phénomène inscrit dans la matérialité d'une expérience ouvrière et postcoloniale collective.
