Summary
La ville de Constantinople, rempart de la Chrétienté en Orient, a, pendant plus de mille ans, résisté à tous les assauts. Elle est tombée en deux temps et, paradoxalement, le premier coup lui fut porté en 1204 par les croisés venus d'Occident, payés par Venise et avec l'accord tacite de Rome. . Réduit dès lors à fort peu, l'empire «byzantin» fut incapable de repousser les attaques d'un Empire ottoman conquérant de toute l'Asie Mineure. Les Latins ont porté secours, levé des troupes et lancé des flottes de guerre à plusieurs reprises ; mais les conflits qui opposaient rois et princes mobilisaient le plus gros de leurs forces. Si Constantinople ne fut pas abandonnée à elle-même, l'Occident, requis par la guerre entre ses nations, accepta l'agonie de l'empire chrétien d'Orient, sans comprendre qu'il serait lui-même la proie suivante. .
