Summary
Des hérétiques les plus célèbres du Moyen Âge, il ne reste rien, sauf les châteaux qu'on leur attribue à tort. Nous ne les connaissons qu'au travers de ce qu'en ont dit leurs détracteurs et leurs persécuteurs. Si ces écrits ne nous donnent aucun accès direct à la parole des cathares, ils révèlent en revanche une construction savante de l'ennemi, mise au service de la propagande pontificale et d'une croisade intérieure perpétuellement renouvelée. Car les cathares ont bel et bien été combattus avec âpreté par l'Église, parfois en collaboration avec les appareils d'État monarchiques, qui en firent un banc d'essai de leur souveraineté. Huit siècles aujourd'hui nous séparent de ces dissidents à qui l'on a longtemps prêté une religion ancienne venue d'Orient mais qui, en réalité, supportaient de plus en plus mal le joug d'une Église toute-puissante et corrompue. Huit siècles de mythes, de falsifications, de récupérations que ce livre déjoue pour mieux rendre justice à ces milliers d'hommes et de femmes qui, du côté de Milan, Lyon, Toulouse ou Cologne, se trouvèrent pris dans les mailles du filet de l'Eglise et de l'État.
