Summary
Vallée laurentienne, 1757.L'intolérance règne toujours sur le bourg de Sainte-Anne-de-Pointcarré et le mauvais sort semble s'acharner sur Nicolas et Marie-Angélique Delavoye. Après avoir essuyé une virulente agression, le pauvre cordonnier n'est pas au bout de ses peines : une fois de plus, son épouse fait face aux médisances de son entourage à la suite d'une atteinte ignoble à sa dignité. Heureusement, le vent finit par tourner, permettant aux jeunes mariés de poursuivre leur rêve d'une vie paisible, au pied du grand chêne où ils avaient l'habitude de se rencontrer, quelques années plus tôt. Pourtant, leur répit sera de courte durée. Alors que les rumeurs d'une guerre imminente courent sur les rives du Saint-Laurent, l'appel aux armes des hommes valides laisse les femmes livrées à elles-mêmes, certaines se retrouvant bientôt réduites à la famine. L'heure de vérité a maintenant sonné, et Marie-Angélique surprend par sa détermination et son courage.
