The McLaren MP4/4 is the iconic F1 car used by McLaren during the 1988 grand prix season, which won all but one race during the year, and took Ayrton Senna to his first World Championship after a season-long battle with teammate Alain Prost. McLaren achieved an astonishing ten 1-2 finishes with the car, and suffered only two car-related retirements during the season. The car was designed by Steve Nichols, assisted by F1 design guru Gordon Murray, and borrowed heavily from the features appearing on the 1986 low-line Brabham BT55 designed by Murray. The MP4/4 used a Honda 1.5-litre V6 engine, in the final year for turbo engines in F1 (until they reappeared in 2014). The team designed the all-new car around the Honda engine, which gave them an advantage over most other teams who were using cars evolved from their 1987 chassis
