EN SAVOIR PLUS Résumé

Any Gun Can Play - Gilbert Roland and Edd "Kookie" Byrnes star in this spaghetti western. Bounty hunter George Hilton is dispatched to track down a wily criminal. Hilton decides to wait until the crook leads him to a fortune in buried gold; at that point, the so-called hero intends to stake his own claim. Naturally, not everything works out as planned. Go Kill & Come Back features a Francesco De Masi musical score. [Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide]

Boot Hill - A tough adventurer and his sidekick find outlaws and rowdy women in this action-filled spaghetti western. [Kristie Hassen, All Movie Guide]

Cry Blood, Apache - Telling the story of his early life in flashback, a former prospector (Joel McCrea, with flashback sequences featuring son Jody) explains his brutal massacre of a tribe of Indians. The only survivor (Marie Gahua) agrees to lead him to a secret gold mine. [John Bush, All Movie Guide]

Dan Candy's Law - When a Canadian Mountie is killed by an Indian, his partner tracks down the man to avenge the death. The film is also known as Alien Thunder. [John Bush, All Movie Guide]

Day of the Wolves - Another perfect crime is committed in this crime drama. This time, a tiny town finds itself terrorized and completely sealed off by seven strangely bearded men, who promptly begin stealing everything in sight. The only one who can save the town is the former sheriff. [Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide]

Deadwood '76 - A simple case of mistaken identity causes a gold prospector to get mixed up in a grudge between two outlaws in this Western- hriller featuring Arch Hall Jr. in his sixth screen appearance. When Southern gold prospector Billy May (Hall) sets up camp in the Deadwood, the fearful inhabitants of the lawless town quickly mistake him for Billy the Kid. Unaware that Wild Bill Hickok is on the hunt for Billy the Kid and deeply in love with a beautiful squaw, Billy May sets out to seek revenge in Deadwood when his girl is raped by a pair of local troublemakers. As Wild Bill Hickok arrives in Deadwood awaiting the appearance of Billy the Kid, the stage is set for an explosive confrontation that could blow the whole Western frontier sky high. [Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide]

Death Rides a Horse - Bill (John Phillip Law) grows up to seek revenge on the gang that killed his parents. He meets up with Ryan (Lee Van Cleef), a veteran gunslinger seeking his own revenge for the ones who put him in prison. The two proceed to shoot everything that moves in this violent spaghetti western. Bill eventually discovers Ryan was there when his parents were killed and is torn between killing Ryan and letting him ride off into the sunset. [Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide]

Four Rode Out - In this western, a Mexican desperado tries to flee his partner, a determined girl friend, and a US Marshal. [Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide]

God's Gun - One of two 1976 Italian-Israeli co-productions starring Lee Van Cleef and Leif Garrett (Joseph Manduke's Kid Vengeance was the other), this spaghetti Western stars Van Cleef in a dual role as twin brothers. One of the brothers, Father John, is gunned down by the ruthless Sam Clayton (Jack Palance), allowing Sam's gang to take over Juno City. Young Johnny (Garrett) crosses into Mexico to convince the priest's twin, a retired bounty hunter named Louis, to strap on his guns one more time and save the town. Van Cleef is compelling, even in his somewhat laughable wig, and the familiar cast also includes Richard Boone and Sybil Danning, but it somehow misses the mark. Irwin Yablans, who made his name with Halloween two years later, co-produced with Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus. [Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide]

The Hanged Man - Steve Forrest, in his last starring role before moving permanently to series television with S.W.A.T., plays James Devlin, a once-notorious gunman who is wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Through an accident -- though the priest Father Alvaro (Rafael Campos) insists it was divine intervention -- he survives the hanging, barely, and is set free, a death certificate having been duly and lawfully issued by the doctor (William Bryant) who examined the "body." A near walking corpse, with an odd, dark fire in his eyes and a strangely low body temperature and heartbeat, Devlin doesn't know what to do with the rest of his life, however long that may be -- he's got enemies still walking around who would like to finish the job, and neither the doctor nor the priest can tell him how long he might live. Having already reformed before he was convicted, he goes the rest of the way and decides to spend what time he's been given, and use the skills he still has as a gunman and soldier of fortune, on the side of the angels, helping people who need it. He quickly finds himself up to his neck in a deadly land war between an ambitious mining tycoon (Cameron Mitchell) and a young widow (Sharon Acker) for the property she owns. [Bruce Eder, All Movie Guide]

Joshua - In this post-Civil War Western, Fred Williamson stars as a vigilante on the hunt for the men who killed his mother. First titled The Black Rider. [Jason Ankeny, All Movie Guide]

Kid Vengeance - One of Cannon Films' two 1976 Italian-Israeli co-productions starring Lee Van Cleef and Leif Garrett (Gianfranco Parolini's Pistola di Dio was the other), this spaghetti western was actually shot in the Middle East by American director Joseph Manduke. Pop star Garrett plays Tom, a teenager who teams with a black gunfighter named Isaac (Jim Brown) to avenge his family. The culprit was McClain (Van Cleef), a sadistic outlaw who carried out the brutal rape-massacre, but his role is minor, as most of the film deals with Tom's maturation and coming to terms with his feelings. Omnipresent 1970s character actors Glynnis O\'Connor and John Marley co-star. If there is anything remarkable about Kid Vengeance, it is Francesco Masi's fine musical score, but the film is otherwise anemic. [Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide]

Mad Dog Morgan - Dennis Hopper plays the title character in this true story of a 19th-century Australian gold-digger who is pressed into a life of crime. A six-year stint in jail doesn't provide reform, but does introduce him to an Aboriginal partner-in-crime (David Gulpilil). The duo then proceed to terrorize the province of New South Wales with no lack of violence. The TV version was retitled Mad Dog. [John Bush, All Movie Guide]

Era Sam Walbash... Lo Chiamavano Cosi Sia - Robert Woods stars as Sam Walbash in this silly but enjoyable spaghetti western from prolific filmmaker Demofilo Fidani (using the pseudonym "Miles Deem"). Walbash is the sole survivor of a bloody saloon massacre carried out by Mash Flanigan (Dino Strano billed as "Dean Stratford"), a fugitive bandit seeking to eliminate potential witnesses. Walbash, whose younger brother is murdered in the bar, chases Flanigan to Golden City for revenge, leading to the obligatory showdown. Dennis Colt and Simone Blondell (Fidani's offscreen wife) co-star in this melodramatic time killer. [Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide]

Savage Journey - A group of wagon train pioneers who are early followers of the Church of Latter Day Saints find persecution at every turn, as they are run out of each new town they hope to call home. With nowhere else to go, they turn their sites to unsettled lands, where they battle both the environment and the native peoples already living there in order to create the community that would come to be Salt Lake City. Following the band of Mormons on their journey, this drama is based on the real life story of their leader Brigham Young. [Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide]

They Call Me Trinity - In order to protect a group of Mormons from Mexican bandidos, two brothers are forced to c
