On April 20th, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing eleven BP workers and spewing 200 million barrels of oil into the ocean. DIRTY ENERGY goes inside the lives of local Louisiana residents impacted by one of the worst environmental disasters in history-long gone from television screens and the eye of the American public-and manifesting long-term economic and health crises. The film is a poignant portrait of the human cost of having millions of gallons of oil and toxic dispersant in the ecosystem, and the systematic failure by BP and the U.S. Government to transparently manage the environmental assault, which will affect the world's oceans and rivers for generations to come.

In this documentary centered on the 2010 BP oil spill, filmmaker Bryan D. Hopkins speaks with many of the Louisiana residents whose lives were directly impacted by the devastating environmental disaster. As their stories reveal the failures of both BP and the U.S. Government in ensuring that the situation was handled swiftly and effectively, Hopkins also explores the potential problems that the calamity could cause in the region for generations to come.
