Between 1928 and 1971, 3.8 million people worldwide immigrated to Canada. The majority of European immigrants landed at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Among them were many from the Netherlands. ACROSS THE ATLANTIC traces the experience of people who came to Canada from the Netherlands as part of a large post-World War II migration. It explores why the Dutch came, how they came, the first years in The Promised Land , the influence of World War II, first jobs, homesickness and loneliness, religion, establishing a family, how the Netherlands and Canada have changed over the years, how they look back at their decision to immigrate... Through interviews with three generations of Dutch immigrants and historical film footage, you will find out what it was like to immigrate to Canada in the 1940s, '50s and '60s. * * * * ACROSS THE ATLANTIC contains historical film footage and photos from the 1940s, '50s and '60s. Included are Holland-America Line's steam ships: Volendam, Groote Beer, Sibajak, Kota Inten, Maasdam, Waterman and Rijndam. Featured also are various Polygoon newsreels of Dutch immigrants passing customs, boarding and departing from Rotterdam, then arrival and customs procedures in Canada at Pier 21 in Halifax, and at Montreal. As well: train rides to the immigrants' sponsors, Canadian armed forces liberating the Netherlands, and more.
