When she graduated from Osaka School of Music in 1988, she applied to be a composer for Capcom and, much to her surprise and delight, she got the job. Although her parents and peers were worried and upset that she chose to work in video games, she quickly made a name for herself in the field. Her first major project came in 1991 when she composed the soundtrack for Street Fighter II. Shimomura states that she draws inspiration from her work from classical composers such as Frederic Chopin and Ludwig van Beethoven, as well as having a strong interest in Jazz.
