*** Résumé en anglais seulement ***One of the most recorded jazz artists of the 1950s and 60s, Paul Chambers is among the founding fathers of modern upright bass. Equaled in his skill and ability on the instrument only by Charles Mingus and Oscar Pettiford, Chambers virtuosic technique, impeccable timing and finely tuned intonation made him one of the most sought after session musicians of the bop era. He appeared on some of the most important recordings of his time and was one of the first jazz bassists to use a bow, a feature that is prominent across his legendary catalogue. Alongside his rich body of work as a bandleader, Chambers appeared on a staggering number of albums as a sideman, many of which remain the most influential records from the classic age of jazz. These include John Coltrane s Blue Train (Blue Note, 1958) and Giant Steps (Atlantic, 1960), Thelonious Monk s Brilliant Corners (Riverside, 1957), Art Pepper s Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section (Contemporary, 1957) and Oliver Nelson s The Blues And The Absent Truth (Impulse!, 1961), alongside a plethora of other appearances with the likes of Chet Baker, Bill Evans and Red Garland. His crowning achievement however was his playing on Miles Davis Kind Of Blue (Columbia, 1959), an album which changed the direction of the jazz idiom. This four CD collection, containing in excess of four hours of music, collates all of Chambers original albums released during his short life. Faithfully remastered and featuring some of the finest bass playing ever recorded, this box set reveals a hugely important chapter in jazz history and, in so doing, serves as a fitting tribute to a true giant of the genre.
