Summary
À partir de la fin du 8e siècle, les Vikings, venus de Scandinavie, apparaissent régulièrement en Grande-Bretagne et sur le continent européen avec leurs drakkars pour des raids. Ces navires de combat en état de naviguer, d'une vingtaine de mètres de long, avaient une proue à l'avant et à l'arrière, de sorte qu'ils pouvaient entrer ou sortir dans les deux sens. Grâce à un faible tirant d'eau d'un peu moins de 1,50 mètre, les Vikings pouvaient également naviguer à la voile ou à la rame sur les rivières et ainsi faire des raids dans les régions intérieures du pays. Les Vikings ont pénétré jusqu'en Islande, au Groenland et même en Amérique du Nord avec leurs navires de combat rapides et maniables de 20 nœuds, également appelés dragons, comme le prouvent les découvertes de colonies.
