Flashbacks reveal that the two men are in fact twins who were separated at birth. Furthermore, the evil twin had for years lived in squalor with Rin, Yukio's amnesiac wife. Now he assumes his brother's identity, resumes his sordid relationship with Rin while forcing Yukio to live like an animal to pay for the crimes of his family. Tsukamoto brilliantly juxtaposes hyperactive cinematography with opulent backgrounds, lavish costume design and haunting atmospheric music to achieve a result which is both frightening and visually stunning.
