Un soir de Noël, il y a longtemps, un petit bébé orphelin rampe dans le sac de cadeaux du père Noël et est emporté au pôle Nord. Appelé Buddy (Will Ferrell) et élevé par papa lutin (Bob Newart), il devient bientôt évident qu’il n’est pas à sa place , puisqu’il est beaucoup plus grand que tous les autres lutins. Déterminé à trouver un endroit ou il se sentira véritablement chez lui, Buddy se met en route pour trouver son vrai père… à New York!Buddy se rend bientôt compte que la grande ville n’est pas l’endroit idéal pour un lutin et que son père (James Caan) est sur la liste de ceux qui n’ont pas été sage! Mais, surtout, il découvre que le monde souffre d’un grave manque d’esprit de Noël, ce qui cause toutes sortes de tracas au père Noël!Avec l’aide d’une séduisante femme-lutin d’un grand magasin (Zooey Deschanel), Buddy tente d’enseigner à son père et au monde le véritable sens de Noël et de prouver à tous que le père (Ed Asner) existe vraiment. --------------One Christmas Eve long ago, a small orphan baby crawled into Santa’s bag of gifts and was carried off to the North Pole.
