Summary
La hideuse . À la fin des années 1950, dans un bourg des Deux-Sèvres, Marguerite, mariée et mère de trois enfants, quitte le domicile familial et disparaît sans un mot. Des années plus tard, sa fille enquête pour comprendre les raisons et les circonstances de cet événement qui a marqué sa vie. De la vérité, elle n'a que les bribes qu'on a bien voulu lui confier. Certes, il y aurait eu un autre homme, plus aisé que son père, que sa mère aurait rejoint sur la côte. Mais est-ce bien seulement cela, son histoire ? Et comment vivre libre après avoir tout abandonné ?. À partir d'indices littéraires - de Virginia Woolf à Emil Ferris -, de journaux intimes et de ses propres souvenirs, la narratrice se plonge dans la condition féminine de l'après-guerre pour retracer l'histoire de Marguerite. Au fur et à mesure, émerge une figure de femme et de mère à l'identité complexe, tour à tour sombre et lumineuse. Une femme dont les rêves, plus vastes que l'horizon étroit de son foyer et de son milieu social, ouvriront à sa fille de nouvelles voies. Reine Bellivier livre un premier roman poignant sous la forme d'une enquête, qui révèle combien le désir impétueux de liberté peut bouleverser des vies en apparence minuscules.
