Pavarotti belonged to a golden generation of singers that included his close friend and fellow Modenese Mirella Freni, Renata Scotto, Shirley Verrett, and such younger colleagues as José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, Éva Marton, Leona Mitchell, Ruggero Raimondi and Katia Ricciarelli. Joan Sutherland was already a household name even beyond the world of opera by the time she first worked with Pavarotti. The performances given by the stupendous Sutherland on tour in Australia with the young tenor in 1965 confirmed Pavarotti s place among the most exciting artists of his generation. The fervour and special chemistry of their onstage partnership, not to mention the technical prowess that hallmarked both singers work, registers clearly in the beguiling duet from Lucia di Lammermoor, Verranno a te sull aure , a showstopper that they deliver with heart-catching intensity. The veteran Italian baritone Sesto Bruscantini, born in 1919, held audiences spellbound worldwide with his buffo antics and infinitely subtle singing as Dulcamara in Donizetti s L elisir d amore. He found his ideal Nemorino in Pavarotti, here sounding fresh and larger than life in their duet Voglio dire, lo stupendo .
Leona Mitchell s soprano voice, with its qualities of warmth and steel, also married well with the Pavarotti sound. A regular at New York s Metropolitan Opera throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Mitchell is on fine form in Verdi s Ernani, raising the emotional temperature in ensemble with Pavarotti and Ruggero Raimondi in Ferma, crudele, estinguere perché vuoi tu due vite? as the opera unfolds towards its tragic conclusion.
In his career s later years, Pavarotti worked with and encouraged stars of the next generation, Nuccia Focile among them. The admirable Sicilian soprano won the International Pavarotti Competition in 1986 and became a regular collaborator in the great tenor s open-air concerts. She joined Pavarotti in Mascagni s L amico Fritz, subject of his first complete opera recording, to give an eloquent and deeply moving performance of the opera s famous Cherry Duet Suzel, buon dì at the Piazza Grande in Modena. Their rousing account of the Brindisi or Drinking Song from La traviata encapsulates both artists immense passion for singing together.
Pavarotti s 1972 studio recording of Nessun dorma! became a massive bestseller after it was used by the BBC as theme music to its coverage of the 1990 World Cup in Italy. The song reached new ears thanks to its inclusion in the first Three Tenors concert, performed at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome on the eve of the tournament s final game and televised to a vast global audience. Domingo and Carreras helped up the aria s emotional ante by singing successive phrases and partnering Pavarotti in its final sustained high B. This performance, like the other tracks on this DVD, reveals the power of great singing to penetrate regions of the soul usually obscured by daily cares and superficial distractions, to open listeners to new ways of being in the world.
